A dead horse or a bit about consulting. (anecdote)
A Dakota Indian proverb states: "If you find yourself riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to jump off."
However, in business, it seems that we often try to use other strategies in relation to a failed project - a "dead horse" - in the hope of reviving it. Here are some of them:
1. Buy a stronger whip
2. Changing riders
3. Say "We have always ridden the horse this way"
4. Create a committee to study the horse
5. Organise visits to other organisations to see how they ride their dead horses
6. Raising the standards of racing on dead horses
7. Creating a tiger team to revive a dead horse
8. We will organise a training seminar on the development of racing skills
9. We check the condition of the dead horse against the modern environment
10. We change the requirements for a horse, proclaiming that this horse is not dead
11. We hire contract workers to ride our dead horse
12. Gathering several dead horses into a harness to increase speed
13. We declare that no horse is too dead to be whipped
14. Provide additional funding to improve horse performance
15. We analyse costs to see if contractors can ride it cheaper
16. We buy a product that will make a dead horse jump faster
17. We proclaim that a dead horse is "better, faster, cheaper"
18. Creating quality mugs to find a use for a dead horse
19. Revising the requirements for horse performance
20. We say that this horse was bought at cost as an independent variable
21. Promoting a dead horse to a management position
